A consulting firm came to me with a problem I hear increasingly often: They wanted to use AI to improve their advisory work — but they couldn't touch any of the obvious solutions.

Here's where it gets interesting — and where my experience building AI agent teams paid off.

The agents don't rely on their general training data to give advice. That would be a recipe for hallucination — confident-sounding recommendations based on statistical patterns rather than verified knowledge.
Instead, each specialist agent is connected to curated knowledge bases through Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG):
- Regulatory databases: Current legislation, compliance requirements, and regulatory guidance relevant to the firm's practice areas
- Industry best practices: Verified frameworks and methodologies from professional associations and academic research
- Sector-specific playbooks: Guidance tailored to different industries (manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, etc.)
- Internal case knowledge: Anonymized patterns from the firm's own successful engagements
The key principle: Every recommendation the AI makes is grounded in a specific, citable source. Consultants can trace any suggestion back to its origin — a regulation, a study, a proven methodology.
This isn't AI replacing expertise. It's AI making expertise more accessible and consistent.
Human-in-the-Loop: AI as Foundation, Not Final Answer
This is the point I emphasize most with clients: The AI system produces qualified foundations, not finished deliverables.
Here's the workflow in practice:
- A consultant receives a client engagement with specific questions
- The orchestrator agent analyzes the context and routes to relevant specialists
- Specialist agents generate draft recommendations, each citing their sources
